Copa America has finally begun in Brazil after being postponed for an entire year because of Covid-19 and the subsequent removal of Argentina and Colombia as hosts.

At the Estádio do Maracan in Rio de Janeiro, the 2021 Copa América final was played on July 10, 2021. The tournament’s knockout stage began on July 2, 2021 with the quarterfinals.

Originally, games in the knockout round were set to take place from July 4th to the 12th, 2020.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in South America, the event was pushed back to 2021 on March 17, 2020.

On Saturday, July 3, 2021, Peru will play Paraguay at the Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico in Goiania, Brazil, in the first quarterfinal game of the Copa America 2021.

Defending champions of the Copa America Group B winners Brazil will play 2015 Copa America winners Chile in Rio de Janeiro’s Estádio Nilton Santos in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

So far in the group stage of this year’s Copa America, Neymar and his colleagues have scored as much as 10 goals in just four games.

In the quarterfinals of the Copa America, Brazil’s fiercest rivals, Argentina, will take on Ecuador in the Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico. Argentina has won the tournament a record 14 times. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, outscored Group A’s other teams and ultimately finished ahead of Uruguay.

At the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia, Brazil and Argentina face relatively easy opponents in the quarterfinals, but 15-time Copa America champions Uruguay face a difficult assignment against Colombia.

Copa America 2021 kicked off on Sunday 13th, with no one 100% sure whether the competition would be held or not, or if the full complement of ten CONMEBOL teams would all show at the last minute hosts Brazil or not owing to the growth of the COVID pandemic.

Final Words

There are only ten teams in the continent, so they were divided into two groups of five with the top four teams from each group advancing to the playoffs. Group play served little purpose other than to determine the tournament’s bottom two teams.

Australia and Qatar, two AFC representatives, were scheduled to play as guest nations but pulled out after the tournament’s dates were moved.

If a game in the knockout stages is tied after 90 minutes, extra time will be played, and if necessary, penalties will be used to decide the winner. In addition, CONMEBOL has permitted each side to select a roster of 23 players.
