Frenchman Geoffrey Bouchard of the AG2R team and Norwegian Vegard Stake Laengen of the Pogacar’s UAE team tested positive for Covid and were removed from the race before the peloton departed Dole in the Jura region on Saturday morning, casting a pall of uncertainty over the race.

However, cowbell-ringing spectators lined the route, cheering on the group until they crossed into Switzerland and got their first look of the looming Alpine mountains that lay ahead.

Pogacar and Geraint Thomas, who was in third place, both crashed early on, while French climber Thibaut Pinot not only crashed twice but also got a whack on the nose from an inattentive vendor selling food in plastic bags by the side of the road. On stage nine, Magnus Cort Nielsen of the EF team will wear the polka dot jersey again, and Tom Pidcock of Ineos will wear the white under-26’s jersey, albeit as the runner-up to Pogacar.

With less than four miles to go, the yellow jersey group caught up to the 11-rider breakout, and van Vleuten got out of her saddle to sprint up the last steep ascent.

After eight stages, she finished 30 seconds ahead of her countrywoman Vollering, for a total victory margin of 3 minutes and 48 seconds. At least the polka dot jersey she won as the Queen of the Mountains was something to wear as she mourned. For the third place on the stage, Italy’s Silvia Persico rode a Valcar, finishing slightly ahead of Poland’s Niewiadoma.

Van Aert has Won Two Stages So Far in 2022

Van Aert has won two stages so far in 2022 and is 115 points ahead of Fabio Jakobsen in the green jersey classification. He has finished second in the opening three stages.

“Of course I’m over the moon excited. Van Aert of Team Jumbo-Visma remarked, “Today was a chance to pick up a lot of green points on a few of my competitors.” ”

I’m really happy that my team gave it their all to track down the breakaway and set me up for the game-winning goal.

I had to work to stay on the wheel of Pogacar and his colleagues as we ascended the 4.5-kilometer, 4-percent grade climb, but I knew the sprint would be easier once we reached the top.

Final Words

“Winning in the Olympic city could add a little bit more, but it’s always good to win a stage in the Tour de France,” he said.

Pogacar, a Slovenian, came in third, earning him additional seconds and allowing him to extend his lead.
